AT&T drops controversial $39bn bid for T-Mobile
The companies will no longer merge

AT&T dropped its controversial $39billion bid for T-Mobile USA, bowing to opposition over the deal that would have made it the largest cell phone operator in the country.

The deal was troubled from the get-go  - the Justice Department sued to block the merger in August and the Federal Communications Commission's chairman voiced his conces last month.

One analyst called the news ‘a bit of an anti-climax,' as the possible merger has been riddled with problems for months.
