Ashley Olsen murder

Prosecutors investigating the murder of Ashley Olsen in Italy have said that she suffered fractures to the skull and she was strangled.

The details emerged after police revealed they had detained the prime suspect following analysis of DNA found on a condom, a cigarette and under her fingeails.

Florence prosecutors identified the suspect as Tidiane Cheik Diaw, a 25-year-old Senegalese man who arrived in Italy a few months ago illegally.

Prosecutors said witnesses reported seeing Olsen and Diaw leaving a disco early Friday moing and enter her apartment in Florence"s historic centre.

Investigators said he had taken her cell phone, put his own SIM card in it and used it.

Previously police had spoken to her boyfriend and friends about Ashley"s murder.

They expressed horror at the slaying of a woman known around Florence for her beagle, Scout, and said they hoped her killer would be found quickly.

One friend, named only as Amy, said: ‘I can"t imagine a person who would hurt her, she is a gentle, a kind, a beautiful, friendly, lovely girl and it"s an awful shock.

We"ve got a great community here of people and everyone loved her."

Friends and other expats expressed hope that the case wouldn"t end up repeating the flawed, flip-flopping investigation into the Amanda Knox case over the murder of Meredith Kercher.
