A Mesa woman was taken into custody on Wednesday for allegedly beating her 10-year-old daughter with an extension cord.

The girl reported the incident to her school nurse on Oct. 16, the day after it happened.

The victim said her mom made her lie on the bed and pull her pajamas down to prepare for a "whupping" as punishment for getting into trouble at school, according to a court document.

The girl said her mom told her that using a belt on her obviously wasn't working because she was still be being bad, the document stated. The victim said her mom grabbed a white extension cord and whipped her with that instead.

The victim didn't know how many times she was hit with the extension cord, but knew that it was more than once, court paperwork stated. The victim said that it hurt to sit and added that she had bruises on the back of her legs.

The girl indicated her mother had whipped her before, according to a probable cause statement.

The school nurse observed the girl had numerous bruises on her thigh and left calf.

A search warrant was served at the house and police recovered the white extension cord.

Police arrested Erinn Gillis, 31, Wednesday moing, interviewed her and then booked her into jail on one count of child abuse.
