An actor has died after he was stabbed in the stomach during theatre rehearsals.

Daigo Kashino, a 33-year-old Japanese actor, was rehearsing scenes with a theatre group in Tokyo when he sustained the stab wounds.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but passed away hours later.

An investigation has been launched by police in the Japanese capital to discover if the incident was an accident.

Other members of the theatre group saw Kashino hunched over and heard him groan, according to major Japanese broadcaster NHK.

It has not yet been revealed if the sword was a real replica or a theatre prop.
