6 Hurt During Disturbance at Youth Detention Facility in Dekalb County
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - At least a half dozen people were hurt in a disturbance at the Regional Youth Detention Facility in DeKalb County on Wednesday evening.
Officials said it started around 8 p.m. with a disturbance. SWAT teams were called to the facility on Clifton Springs Road after reports of a disturbance. Authorties at the scene would not comment as to what prompted the heavily-armed police presence.
Police said one of the five injured staff members was transported to an area hospital. Authorities said all injuries were minor. A few of the youths were also injured.
A number of hooded detainees were led out of the center and loaded into state vans.
A press release issued early Thursday moing by the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice stated "The staff at the facility immediately identified the circumstances surrounding the disturbance, identified the youth involved and with the assistance of the DeKalb Police Department safely secured the youth."
The release further stated that the incident is under investigation and charges may be possible against those involved. They said the facility has retued to normal operations.
The incident comes almost two weeks after officials with the facility asked for help in finding 16-year-old Dwayne McCloud who had escaped the facility. McCloud was being held for his role in a Savannah murder. He was found a day later in DeKalb County.
The Regional Youth Detention Facility is a state-run facility under the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice.
