A 13-year-old boy was robbed at gunpoint for his cellphone on his way to school Friday moing.

Atlanta police said the teen was walking on Connely Road in southeast Atlanta on his way to his bus stop when a man in a long black coat and a big hat put a gun to his side and demanded the boy’s cellphone.

The boy ran back home around 8 a.m. and his mother called police to investigate.

”He was playing music and the guy walked up on him and put a gun to his side and asked him for it, the boy’s mother, Nekila White, said.

White said her son was shaken, but not hurt. His aunt, Nikko Brown, said her nephew is traumatized.

”It’s just sad. And it’s scary for him. This is his first time experiencing anything like that, Brown.

The Forest Park Middle School student was carrying a Metro PCS Samsung Admire.

”He hasn’t even had the phone a good two weeks yet, and here he is, about to lose his life over it, White said.

The teen’s mother said he was too shaken to discuss what happened with Channel 2 Action News reporter Sophia Choi, especially because the man who held him up is still roaming the streets and likely lives in the area.

”I would suppose it’s just somebody just watching him, looking at him talking on it, White said.

”The economy is so bad. People out here are just taking and doing anything, just for money, just to get by. They took his phone. They could have taken his life, and I think that’s just sad, Brown said.

White said her son convinced her he needed the phone for emergencies, but when a real emergency happened, he could not even use it. She said he will not be getting another phone.
