A 10-year-old girl has given birth at school after complaining about having a stomach ache.

Teachers took the girl, who has not been named, to hospital where doctors discovered that she was in the late stages of labour.

Despite the girl"s age and her only being seven-months pregnant at the time, the baby was delivered safely last Tuesday.

They are now being cared for at the hospital in south-east Brazil.

It is believed that the girl became pregnant after her 40-year-old step father, who has been accused of rape of a child and illegal possession of firearms, allegedly abused her.

The mother of the girl, who is from Brazil, said she was unaware that she was pregnant and had not noticed her stomach had become larger than normal.

However, she told police in Belo Horizonte that the girl had become more introverted since October last year and had started to struggle with her school work.

Police said: ‘The mother alleges that she, along with other family members, hadn"t noticed, taking into consideration the child"s small frame."

The girl told police that her step father had threatened to kill her mother and brother if she ever revealed the abuse.
