Security guards abruptly rushed the leader of Quebec's separatist party from the stage after an armed man shot two people, killing one victim outside the Montreal venue where she was speaking.

Parti Quebecois leader Pauline Marois - whose party had just won a narrow victory in provincial elections - took the stage to thank supporters at Montreal"s Metropolis stadium.

But before she could begin speaking, several guards rushed the stage, surrounding the politician as she quickly exited the stage.

According to the Twitter account for the Montreal Police, officers arrested the suspected gunman.

Emergency medical workers said one victim was pronounced dead at the scene and a second person was wounded. A third person was treated for shock.
