Two people confirmed dead after their small plane collided with F-16 fighter jet over South Carolina - but military pilot survived

Federal Aviation Administration officials confirmed to WCIV that a mid-air collision occurred between a Cessna C-150 aircraft and a F-16 fighter aircraft 11 miles north of Charleston around 11 a.m. ET.

Two people aboard the Cessna were killed in the crash, National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson said. Knudson said the Cessna was destroyed.

Knudson said the Air Force pilot ejected and was apparently uninjured.
 
Shaw Air Force Base tweeted that one of its fighting falcon jets crashed near Joint Base Charleston. Shaw Air Force Base is in Sumter, South Carolina.

Officials said during a press conference Tuesday that there were no injuries from falling debris. Debris from the Cessna is scattered over a large area including a rice field. 

According to officials with the SC Air National Guard, the incident also involves an F-16, but not one of it's planes.

The crash was reported near Lewisfield Plantation off Old Highway 52. Moncks Coer is 32 miles north of Charleston.

The cause of the collision has not yet been determined.
