Teen Justin Stolp killed, driver injured after hitting deer in Monroe County
SUMMERFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI - The Monroe County Sheriff's Office confirms 19-year-old Justin Stolp of Petersburg, MI died early Thursday.
Preliminary investigation reveals the single-vehicle crash was caused by a collision with a deer.
Stolp was the passenger of the 2000 Ford Explorer SUV. Driving the vehicle was 18-year-old Dakota Hoffman of Deerfield, MI. Police report he is stable at Toledo Hospital.
The crash happened at 3:25 a.m. near the intersection of Deerfield Road, east of County Line Road in Summerfield Township.
After striking the deer, the vehicle ran off the roadway and crashed into the ditch. It rolled several times before coming to rest in the yard of a private residence.
Deputies say Hoffman was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital.
Stolp was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated. He was then flown by air ambulance to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center where he later died.
Both victims were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
