Teacher forced to remove prayer request board from classroom
A Mississippi teacher who posted a prayer request board in her classroom has been forced to remove it and is now under fire from a humanist group.
A student took a photo of the board Randi Rogers put up in her classroom at Oak Grove Middle School. The student's parent then contacted the American Humanist Association, WDAM reported.
The group's legal center then sent a letter to the Lamar County superintendent and principal, who then ordered Rogers to remove the board.
The association's letter said the prayer request board is "correctly perceived as a constitutional violation." It continuedn accusing Rogers of violating the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.
The First Amendment reads "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Govement for a redress of grievances."
The association said that if corrective steps were not taken by next week, it would take the matter to federal court.
The school district has contacted its attoey and plans to reply to the AHA this week, WDAM reported.
