St. Clair Shores Man George Dombrosis to Serve Only One Year in Jail for Molesting Boy
SAINT CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (WJBK) - A Saint Clair Shores house hidden by overgrown trees also hid a sickening secret. 66-year-old George Gary Dombrosis admits he molested a 13-year-old boy he was supposed to be tutoring.
The child's mother said the convicted sex offender targeted the family when the boy's father died from cancer.
"All of my son's grades had come up. He was working really hard. George seemed to be helping a lot," she said.
But things suddenly tued when the abuse began. The boy eventually told his mother what was happening and the family called police.
The mother thought she had done a thorough background check, but it tus out Dombrosis had done this before.
Dombrosis was convicted of first-degree sexual conduct back in 1978, but he was not on Michigan's Sex Offender Registry, which was created four years later. He also went by his middle name instead of his first name to make his past harder to uncover.
"I'm just really upset at the justice system," said the victim's mother. "I'm almost sickened by how light people have taken this."
Dombrosis is now serving just one year in jail as part of a plea deal the mother accepted because she didn't want her son to have to testify.
"As much as he wanted and was willing to testify, I'm trying to protect my kid," she said.
During his sentencing Tuesday, Dombrosis reportedly thanked so many people the judge told him it wasn't the Academy Awards. When he gets out of jail, he faces four years probation and he'll have to wear a tether for life.
