Soda ban approved by New York City Board of Health
The soda ban is here. Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s controversial proposal to ban sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces has been approved by the New York City Board of Health and should come into effect in six months, barring judicial interference. Predictably, New Yorkers had lots to say about it — and though no one’s reoccupying Union Square on behalf of Mountain Dew, the Twitter rhetoric has been fiery. Still, the board’s vote had some high-level support, including from Bloomberg himself and from celebrity chef and non-New Yorker Jamie Oliver, who tweeted "Some great news just in guys, NYC Board just approved soda ban, congratulations."
