Soccer coach Bernardo Mondragon-Guzman charged with molesting 10-year-old boy
A youth soccer coach and illegal immigrant has been arrested, alleged to have molested at least one of his 10-year-old players.
Placed in a position of trust by Texas parents, Beardo Mondragon-Guzman repeatedly sexually abused the child, police say, adding that investigators suspect there may have been up to four other cases.
The alleged abuse came to light after the young boy came forward and confided in his mum and dad about what had taken place between him and his 41-year-old coach.
The boy told investigators that Mondragon-Guzman forced him to have sex several times at his Garland home and in his car, NBC reported.
He also allegedly forced the boy to watch poography and at one time videotaped the abuse.
Authorities now fear there may be other victims.
'Sadly, it's not surprising,' said Autumn Williams, senior education specialist told the news channel.
'If someone has eaed a position of trust, they are looking for victims, and typically it’s not just one victim. On average, perpetrators have 17 victims.'
But in one child speaking out there is hope that other victims may be be encouraged to do the same.
'The pressure is on the child not to say anything,' Joe Ha, a Garland Police Officer told Fox News.
'Thank goodness we had a child who finally came forward.'
Mondragon-Guzman was hired by the Garland Soccer Association more than five years ago after a background check found him to have a clear criminal record.
It wasn't until his arrest earlier this month that detectives discovered he had been living in the U.S. illegally.
Mondragon-Guzman admitted he had not been bo in the States so they checked with Customs Enforcement and discovered the truth about his citizenship status.
Now police are appealing to Garland parents to contact them if they have any fears their child might have spent time alone with the coach.
