'Ski-mask rapist' Jerry Brooks who has evaded capture for 33 years busted: cops
The “Ski-mask Rapist,” on the lam from North Carolina officials for 33 years, was finally exposed by DNA evidence — and busted at a beachfront condo, police say.
Cold case suspect Jerry Lee Brooks faces 13 criminal charges in connection with a 1979 sexual assault spree, including three counts of rape, the Charlotte Observer reported.
Authorities said they were now trying to determine if the DNA linked Brooks, 62, to any other rapes in North or South Carolina since the 1979 attacks, the newspaper reported.
Brooks was busted Tuesday in Surfside Beach, S.C., and was awaiting extradition to North Carolina.
The investigation into the “Ski-Mask Rapist” reheated last year when Charlotte-Mecklenberg police investigating unsolved crimes linked several rape cases through DNA.
A match sent investigators looking for Brooks, who was living in a rented shore home, authorities said.
Brooks was busted on a variety of charges after the rapes stopped in 1979, including DWI, safecracking, breaking and entering and embezzlement.
He was released from federal prison in 2005 after doing time for an armed bank robbery.
