A shirtless man claimed he was Tarzan and tried to swing into the monkey exhibit at his local zoo, police have said.

John William Rodenbo was found covered in mud at Santa Ana Zoo in Califoia at around 10.30am on Tuesday.

He had reportedly attempted to get into the zoo’s bird exhibit, failed, and then tried to swing into the monkey exhibit. He told police that he was Tarzan.

‘We have a gentleman who is – appears to be – under the influence of something and is climbing in our trees and jumping into animal exhibits,’ zoo director Kent Yamaguchi told the dispatcher during the 911 call.

Yamaguchi told officers that Rodenbo had been climbing several trees around the zoo and trying to get into a number of enclosures.

Arriving police found Rodenbo in possession of methamphetamine, which he was likely on at the time.

None of the animals were disturbed by the incident.
