Sales drop at Philly restaurant after it gets not-so-racist name
Chinks Steaks sales drop after name change

When Joe Groh changed the name of his Philadelphia restaurant in April from Chink's Steaks (a moniker given in 1949 by the original owner to mark his childhood nickname — apparently he had "almond eyes") to Joe's Steaks + Soda Shop, the neighborhood freaked. There were protests, petitions, complaints about political correctness. "I just think it’s ridiculous," griped one local. "Cracker Barrel hasn't had to change their name …

That could be made into a racist thing." Apparently, this anger has affected appetites. Sales at the rechristened Joe's were down 15 percent last month, and the restaurant has been vandalized. Groh defends his decision to ditch a name that many found offensive. "It was time," he said. "It's 2013."
