THIRTY-SEVEN members of a frateity will face charges in the death of a Manhattan student who died during a hazing ritual.

Chun Hsien ‘Michael’ Deng, 19, was at a retreat with the Pi Delta Psi frateity in Pennsylvania on the night of his death in December 2013.

The New York Times reported that five of the 37 students will face murder charges for their involvement in Deng’s death.

The Baruch College student was involved in a hazing ritual called the “glass ceiling”, in which he was blindfolded and had to carry a backpack filled with 14 kilograms of sand on his back.

Members of Pi Delta Psi tackled him, including lifting him up and dropping him on the ground in a move known as spearing.

Deng complained that his head hurt before being knocked unconscious.

Police say frateity members did not act quickly to get Deng proper medical treatment.

Frateity members carried him in to house, where they called a national frateity official, who told them to hide frateity items, police said.

Some members actually changed his clothes before they drove him to the emergency room. Deng died the next moing from severe trauma to his head.

Deng’s family said they were determined that no other parent would be put in the same situation as them.

“Too many families have been devastated as a result of frateity hazing, with at least one student dying every year from hazing since 1970,” the Dengs said. “Frateities and their members must be held accountable, and this step by authorities is an important one.”

Baruch suspended the rights of Pi Delta Psi on campus while conducting an inteal investigation and imposed a moratorium on that frateity’s pledging activities. In May, that ban was extended for three years.
