Police say a city parks superintendent in Northe Califoia was found dead in his bullet-riddled SUV early Monday on a park road..

CBS Sacramento reports another park employee came upon Supt. Steve Ebert's car around 6 a.m. Monday, and found the 59-year-old slumped back in his seat. Ebert's foot was on the brake and the vehicle was still in gear.

The employee noticed multiple bullet holes in the driver's side of the vehicle.  Sheriff's Deputy Jason Ramos said Ebert had been shot numerous times in his head and upper body.

Ebert was the superintendent of the Cordova Recreation and Park District. He oversaw maintenance of 38 parks.

Doug Critchfield, the district's interim administrator, said, "Steve was a compassionate father and a grandfather. He absolutely did not deserve this to happen to him."

As of now, no suspect has been arrested, and police declined to present a possible motive.

The district recently laid off 18 employees, and Critchfield was asked if anyone had threatened Ebert.

"Again I don't want to comment about things that may have been said," he said. "That's part of the ongoing investigation."

For security purposes, the district offices were closed Monday and will be again Tuesday. After that the administration building will be guarded, Critchfield said.
