Melissa’s story has a fairytale ending (Picture: Facebook)

In January 2012, an ambulance team was called to the scene of a brutal domestic attack – Melissa Dohme had been stabbed 30 times by an ex-boyfriend.

One of the first emergency workers on the scene was Cameron Hill. He later told Tampa Bay Times how he arrived to find a young woman on the pavement so drenched in blood ‘you couldn’t tell she was blonde’.

Then 20-years-old, Melissa had been stabbed in the face, arms, back and shoulders by a former high school boyfriend.

Robert Lee Burton Jr. was sentenced to life in prison without parole after pleaded guilty to attempted murder in October 2013

She was air-lifted to hospital. She would flat-line four times, suffer a stroke and partial nerve damage to her face, but she survived.

He may have left me with many scars, missing teeth, an eye that doesn't shut, and a hand that's weak. But he also left me with courage, strength, and faith to pick up the pieces and make an even better picture. Posted by Support Melissa on Sunday, June 3, 2012

According to the Tampa Bay Times, her attacker, Robert Lee Burton Jr., pleaded guilty to attempted murder in 2013.

Melissa now speaks out against domestic violence.

And her story has a truly fairytale ending.

In autumn 2012, she saw Cameron again when he and another EMT surprised her at a talk she was giving in a local church. ‘I had this feeling about him,’ she says.

They met up again and have been together ever since.

On Monday night, Melissa was asked to throw the first pitch at a Tampa Bay Rays baseball game on behalf of Hands Across the Bay, a charity which helps families in crisis.

Cameron arranged to take the ball out to Melissa on the pitch, and she immediately clocked the message he’d written on it: ‘Will you marry me?’

Watch the proposal below – she said yes by the way.
