A handgun owner has been robbed at gunpoint of his weapon.

William Coleman III was openly carrying his new firearm when the robbery happened in the early hours of Saturday in Gresham, Oregon.

The 21-year-old victim was talking with his cousin when the suspect approached and requested a cigarette.

The man eventually asked about the Walther semi-automatic handgun, before producing his own weapon and telling the victim: "I like your gun. Give it to me."

Mr Coleman handed over his weapon, which he had just bought a day earlier, and the suspect left on foot.

Oregon allows gun owners to openly carry firearms, though some localities in the state prohibit or curtail public display of weapons.
