Maryland teen Amber Stanley, shot dead while at home in bed

Prince George's County Police are still searching for the gunman who killed a 17-year-old honor student in her bed.

Amber Stanley was shot multiple times while others inside the home fled.

Neighbors say there has been a lot of increased traffic on Chartsey Street lately where Stanley lived with her mother, sister and a foster child.

"Lots of young people, sitting in cars," says neighbor Tyrone Patterson. "That's unusual for this neighborhood. It's always been quiet. We need to be vigilant to make sure everyone is safe."

On Tuesday, detectives went to the family's home for a trouble call. They aren't releasing a lot of details about it, but sources say they are actively trying to determine if there is any connection to Stanley's slaying.

Investigators say a gunman kicked in the front door at the home just after 10 p.m. Wednesday, climbed the stairs and shot her multiple times in her bed.

Several other people in the home got out unharmed.

Detectives retued to the Kettering neighborhood Thursday handing out flyers offering a $25,000 reward for information in the death of this quiet, dedicated student with dreams of going to Harvard University to study medicine.

"She was just a friendly young lady," Willie Lump says about his young neighbor.

"She was a quiet girl," Shirley Robinson says. "Always focused on doing the right thing."

Patterson has lived in the neighborhood for more than three decades. He's rattled by the student's death.

"I've been here 32 years. I raised two kids here. It's devastating to have something like this happen on your street," Patterson says.

Patterson, former President of the Kettering, Largo, Mitchellville Boys and Girls Club for 22 years, immediately made the call to put the police flyer about the case on its website.

"Our kids go up to 17 [years old], some probably went to her school," says Patterson. "The more people who see the flyer, the better."

Grief counselors were at Charles H. Flowers High School Thursday offering comfort to Stanley's friends. She excelled in her classes, tutored other students and was trying to start a young doctor's club there.
