Man accuses grocer of racism because of its crappy-looking asparagus
When is a bunch of asparagus no longer just a bunch of asparagus? When it's a symbol of racial discrimination, obviously. David Olander noticed that the asparagus at a Schnucks grocery store in Missouri was shriveled and dry, a stark contrast to the plump spears displayed in water-filled trays at a more suburban (read: whiter) location. Olander (who admitted to being in an "oery mood") asked for the manager and asked if the poor-quality veggie "[had] any relationship to the store's location in a black neighborhood."
Olander, a member of St. Louis' human relations commission, wrote a letter to the Schnucks' CEO and later met with employees. "Schnucks does not discriminate on any level,” a store spokeswoman said. [Source]
