Jayln Rippy, 5, was travelling along the Suwannee River near Gainsville, Florida, when she was struck and killed by a jumping sturgeon.

A 5-year-old girl has died after a sturgeon leapt from a river and struck her.

The girl was in a boat on the Suwannee River in Florida.

Wildlife officials said Jayln Rippy died after the fish struck her. Her mother and 9-year-old brother were also injured and taken to hospital in Gainesville, Alachua County. Their condition was not known.

Sturgeons are known for leaping higher than 2 metres out of the water.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said it was the first fatality recorded from a sturgeon strike on the Suwannee River. Four people have been injured by jumping sturgeon this year.

The fish are known for leaping as high as 2 metres above the water. They can grow up to 2.4m long, weigh up to 90kg and can cause serious injuries. Click here for more information about sturgeons.
