A former UNC football player and current Charlotte law student has been charged with murder after police said he pushed another man in front of a car killing him after a bar fight.

Police said Robert Kingston, 26, died after getting thrown into the path of a car by Kenan Gay, 23, outside Ed's Tave in Dilworth.

"This is just devastating," said Paul Cecil, a neighbor and friend of the victim. "He was a wonderful man taken way too early."

Cecil said Kingston was recently engaged and planned on getting married later this year.

Neighbors said Kingston was a sports writer in Charlotte. He previously lived in Ohio.

While reflecting on what happened late Saturday night, Cecil said he'd pray not only for Kingston's family, but for Kenan Gay too, "because not one person is lost, now two people are lost."

Gay is scheduled to appear in court Monday on a charge of murder.

Police said the two men were fighting at Ed's Tave and the incident spilled into the parking lot. They haven't said how the fight started or why it escalated.

According to officers, the driver of the BMW that hit Kingston pulled over immediately and won't face any charges.
