Crash on Route 93 in Wilmington Kills Hernandez-Giron
WILMINGTON - One person was killed in a crash on Route 93 south in Wilmington Monday night.
The crash, involving a tractor trailer and a van, happened just after 5 p.m.
State Police said it appears a Chevrolet van operated by Greg N. Galanopoulos, 49, of Medford, was traveling south in the far left lane of the highway when it suddenly swerved into the lane to its right, where it struck a Freightliner box truck operated by Luis Gasparico, 25, of Providence, R.I.
The box truck went out of control and rolled over to its left, ultimately coming to rest facing northbound on top of the median strip guardrail. Gasparico and his passenger, Cristian F. Heandez-Giron, 32, of Central Falls, R.I., were trapped in the truck and had to be extricated.
Both victims were transported by ambulance to Lahey Clinic in Burlington. Gasparico is being treated for serious injuries, while Heandez-Giron was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The driver of the van was not injured.
Following a thorough investigation, Massachusetts State Police arrested the van's driver, Galanopoulos, for the following crimes: motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation; negligent operation of a motor vehicle; and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He was also cited for a marked lanes violation and speeding.
The van is owned by First Nick Painting Company of Somerville.
The crash remains under investigation
