Birmingham couple David and Wani Shaw not deterred by hateful letter

A Birmingham, Alabama man's Facebook page is getting a lot of attention.

On Sunday, David Shaw took to social media to share a letter he says he received in the mail Saturday. The letter was sent to Shaw's store Magic City Sweet Ice

"At first I kind of thought it was a joke, then I was a little bit conceed for the safety of my family," said Shaw.

The letter reads:

DAVID

IT IS HARD TO IMAGINE A BIRMINGHAM BOY LEAVING AND BRINGING BACK A BLACK WIFE

YOU NEED TO MOVE TO CALIFORNIA WHERE THAT IS SOP

OR GO BACK TO WOODLAWN

Shaw snapped a picture of the letter and decided to respond to the anonymous sender through Facebook. He tells the media he had no way to discuss the letter privately, so he thought by chance the sender would at least be on Facebook and might see it.

Shaw posted the photo with the following message:

1) I LOVE my beautiful black wife and everything about her, (most everything about her). Our love for one another is far deeper than skin color.

2) We won't be moving to Califoia, or God willing, anywhere else anytime soon.

3) You got the address wrong

4) Woodlawn?

Shaw's post has been shared more than 400 times and has received many comments supporting the business owner.

“I would say someone needs to write an open letter to this idiot, but honestly he or she is living so far in the past I doubt they even have inteet access,” said one Facebook user.

"It's really tued into a positive thing. Yesterday was like a party at our store," said Shaw. "So many people drove out to support us! I can't even keep up with the social media positive response."

Shaw says he didn't know if he should tell his wife, Wani Shaw, about the letter, but when he did she immediately laughed.

"She's a very strong woman from West Africa," said Shaw. "She has been through a lot more than a little letter."

The Shaws have been married for 14 years and have three children. They moved to Birmingham four years ago.

Shaw's authentic Italian ice shop opened in west Homewood in April. You can find it in the 700 block of Oak Grove.
