A Washington state woman, who admitted to violently shaking a baby left in her care, received the maximum sentence of 10 years.

"She murdered who my child was supposed to be," said the child's mother, Jaime Thompson.

Thompson pleaded with a judge for the highest possible sentence for Dotty Reed, the babysitter who pleaded guilty to shaking 8-month-old Colby Thompson on May 20, 2010.

"He couldn't tell her to stop, he couldn't say don't hurt me," Thompson said. "He was probably crying to say, ‘pick me up.'"

Reed told police she was babysitting the boy at her home when she forcefully handled the child, slamming him down and jerking him back up. She called 911 when he stopped breathing normally.

Colby underwent weeks of treatment at a hospital and suffers from extensive brain damage.

"He's opened his eyes, but he's completely blind," Thompson said. "He has mild to moderate hearing loss in his right ear and he has a G-tube in his stomach which right now is feeding him."

Reed stared straight ahead for most of the court hearing, while Thompson pleaded with the judge to give her the maximum sentence of 10 years.

Thompson recalled the moing Reed called and told her that Colby was not breathing and at the time, Thompson said she felt sorry for Reed.

"The last thing she heard me say to her was ‘thank you' so many times for being so good to my kids and it kills me inside now," Thompson said.

Reed did address the court and apologized for the pain she has caused the Thompsons.

Doctors say Colby may never see, walk, or really have any semblance of a normal life. Since Colby's injuries, the Thompsons have worked with the legislators to strengthen laws regarding assaults committed by child care providers.
