Angie Epifano, other students call out Amherst for its treatment of sexual assaults
Amherst College in Massachusetts has been under fire since an op-ed by former student and rape survivor Angie Epifano went viral last week. Epifano recounted the incredibly insensitive treatment she received at the sexual assault counseling center, including that pressing charges would be useless because her alleged attacker was about to graduate.
The school ultimately put Epifano in a psychiatric ward as her rapist graduated unimpeded. As Amherst has scrambled to respond, other rape survivors on campus say they aren’t surprised by Epifano’s experience and have shown their solidarity, appearing on a student blog holding up signs of similar advice given to them by Amherst administrators, like, "You never took your case to trial, so you don’t actually count as a rape survivor."
