2 People Dead After Small plane hits airport building in Wichita, KS
An airplane crash at Mid-Continent Airport has killed at least two people and injured at least four, with five more people unaccounted for.
Wichita Fire Chief Ronald Blackwell confirmed the casualties during a news conference Thursday moing. The four injured people were transported to a hospital.
A twin-engine, Beechcraft King Air B200 hit the two-story FlightSafety Inteational building and caused a big explosion with large plumes of smoke visible from several miles away.
According to Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro, the plane reported engine trouble right after takeoff and crashed after trying to retu to the runway.
It has not been confirmed how many people were on the plane. Neither did officials say how many people were inside the building at the time of the crash.
Mid-Continent Airport is seven miles west of the downtown area. It is a small hub and general aviation complex that handles roughly 215,000 operations annually, according to the airport's website.

The Beechcraft King Air line of planes are twin-turboprop aircraft. Beechcraft, with its headquarters in Wichita, began making the King Air line in 1964. The company's headquarters are located in Wichita. According to the Beechcraft website, the company has manufactured more that 54,000 aircraft since 1932 and builds both military and commercial aircraft.
