Shannan Gilbert: Human remains found on Long Island confirmed to be missing prostitute
Remains: Shannan Gilbert's remains were found in thick brush earlier this week, about a quarter of a mile away from where her belongings were found

Suffolk County Police identified the remains found on Gilgo Beach, Long Island as those of missing New Jersey prostitute Shannan Gilbert.

The skeletal remains were found in a marsh about a half-mile from where 24-year-old Gilbert disappeared after meeting a client last year. The county medical examiner confirmed that the remains were Gilbert’s, police said.

The remains were discovered just hours before a vigil marking the one-year anniversary of the L.I. serial killer case.

The cause of death has not been determined, but investigators had said they believed it was an accident.

Homicide detectives found the remains about a quarter mile from where Gilbert’s pants, shoes, pocketbook, ID and other personal items were found last week.

The search for the Jersey City woman started last December and led to discovery of 10 victims whose remains were scattered in miles of brush along a parkway that leads to Jones Beach.

Investigators believe at least one serial killer is responsible for the ten deaths.

Police have repeatedly said they believe Gilbert likely drowned accidentally after fleeing a client’s home.
