Police: 60-Year-Old Woman Attacked with Fireplace Tools

UTICA, Mich. (WJBK) - A Rochester Hills woman was brutally attacked while picking up some personal belongings for a loved one in the hospital.

According to police, 18-year-old Jalen Hughbanks used fireplace tools, including a shovel, a steel poker and more, to viciously beat a 60-year-old woman in the face and the head.

Utica police responded to the 911 call.

"There's a lady at my door. Someone beat her. She needs help right away," a woman can be heard saying on the call.

The victim brought Hughbanks to Utica to pick up some personal items from her niece. The niece was not home, and that is when police said Hughbanks beat the woman, pushed her down the basement stairs and then stole her car. It is 2006 red, four door Ford Fusion with Michigan license plate CAK 9169.

The victim bleeding badly ran across the street for help.

"She said somebody just beat her and stole her car," a woman can be heard telling the 911 operator.

Police said Hughbanks has a criminal record.

The beating victim is hospitalized in serious condition with many lacerations and a broken cheekbone.
