THE last thing you want to hear after making an emergency call is laughter.

But that's exactly what happened to one couple after a freak car accident.

Lalo Delgado's car caught on fire during a trip to Chiva Falls in the US, and the flames spread to his girlfriend who was seriously injured in the blaze, Breitbart reported.

Delgado called the police, telling them "my girlfriend is on fire", only to be met with laughter.

"It's hilarious, huh," he told the operator. "I just heard you smirk."

The operator told Delgado she was laughing about something else.

He even called back to ensure his crisis call was taken seriously.

"Yeah I called in a few minutes ago and I just wanted to make sure you took me seriously," he said.

The Pima County Sheriff's department apologised to the couple for the incident.

"We did not perform as I expect or the citizens of this county expect us to," Captain Jim Berry told news channel KGUN9. "We're going to correct that. Certainly I can understand why he was upset. I would be too."

The Captain also said he would be looking into just what was so funny.

In the meantime, Delgado's girlfriend is in hospital and according to Breitbart.com, "has a long road to recovery."

Talk about adding insult to injury.
