Kidnap victim Elizabeth Smart ties the knot in Hawaii
Wedding bells rang Saturday for Elizabeth Smart, the Utah beauty kidnapped at age 14 and held captive for nine months.
The 24-year-old Smart married boyfriend Matthew Gilmour, 22, in Hawaii, her uncle, Tom Smart, told the Daily News.
“To be in one of her favorite places with her family has made for a dream wedding. It’s been an absolutely beautiful day,” Smart’s spokesperson, Chris Thomas, told People.com, where the nuptials were first reported. “She is positively radiant. And Matthew couldn’t be happier.”
Street preacher Brian David Mitchell snatched Smart from her Salt Lake City bedroom in June 2002 and threatened to kill her if she resisted.
He took her to a remote mountain lair, tethered her to a cable strung between two trees and raped her almost daily.
The hellish ordeal ended with his arrest in March 2003.
