AN ELDERLY couple are lucky to be alive after their house was blown to smithereens.

The husband and wife suffered bus and were rushed to hospital, as firies battled the blaze.

Neighbours are being praised as heroes after they dragged the pair from the wreckage in Cape May, New Jersey.

Mind-blowing images of destruction have been splashed across local news bulletins.

The Mayor Michael Beck said he heard the massive explosion from his home.

"I was in my bedroom slippers, and I told my grandson maybe we got struck by lightning.

"It sounded like an artillery round went off."

Gas lines have recently been installed in the area, yet the cause of the incident has not been revealed.
