Chicago Sun-Times headline about Asiana Airlines criticized for being racist
The Chicago Sun-Times has apologized for a headline following the deadly Asiana Airlines plane crash in San Francisco on Saturday. The all-caps front page of the newspaper read "FRIGHT 214," which, given the Asian origin of the flight (it took off from Seoul, South Korea) and its crew, some saw as a racist interpretation of an Asian accent. Others just thought it cheapened or trivialized a tragedy that took two lives. "There was nothing intentional on our part to play off any stereotypes," Editor-in-Chief Jim Kirk said. "If anybody was offended by that, we are sorry. We were trying to convey the obviously frightening situation of that landing." If you saw the terrifying footage, no additional words were needed.
