A man is in custody after he climbed over the fence surrounding the White House and was swiftly tackled on the North Lawn by Secret Service agents and their dogs.

The security scare happened just over a month since another man, who was armed, sprinted across the same lawn, ran past agents and entered the mansion. He was felled in the ceremonial East Room and taken into custody.

The latest intruder has been identified as Dominic Adesanya, a 23-year-old from Bel Air, Maryland.

Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary said he climbed the north fence line at about 7.15pm and kicked one of the dogs that attacked him

He was taken into custody immediately by uniformed agents who patrol the grounds constantly.

President Barack Obama was at the White House at the time of Wednesday's incident, but the intruder never made it close to the building.

However, the presidential mansion was put on lockdown for about 90 minutes.

Two dogs sustained injuries and were taken to a veterinarian.

The breach occurred the same day that a gunman went on a rampage in the Canadian capital of Ottawa.

Last month's security breach caused embarrassment to the Secret Service and ultimately led to Julia Pierson's resignation as director of the agency after 18 months on the job.
