Aiken Woman Helen Magee Killed in Fight, Man Behind Bars

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide that occurred at 145 Barton Brother Lane, Aiken, SC. According to deputies, the victim and suspect got into a verbal altercation in the front yard of her residence located at 145 Barton Brother Lane, the altercation tued physical and the suspect strangled the victim.

Two juveniles observed the incident take place and called 911. While en route to the
scene deputies observed an individual matching the description provided by the witnesses and detained him. Investigators later determined the individual detained was the person responsible for the crime, he is identified as James Conway Gray, 35, 1538 Hamilton Drive, Aiken SC. The victim has been identified as 31 year old, Helen Magee.

James Gray has been charged with Murder and is currently being held at the Aiken County Detention Center. An autopsy performed in Newberry concluded that Magee died from asphyxiation.  Aiken County Sheriff's Office along with the Coroner's Office are investigating the death.
