2 dead, dozens injured in Amtrak crash near Philadelphia

Two people were killed and dozens more were injured in an Amtrak crash near Philadelphia Sunday moing, the Chester Fire Department confirmed.

The accident was reported at 7:53 a.m. in Chester, Pennsylvania.
 
"Amtrak Train 89, operating from New York to Savannah, Georgia, struck a backhoe that was on the tracks and derailed the lead engine south of Philadelphia," Amtrak wrote in a statement. "There were approximately 341 passengers and seven crew members on board. Initial reports are that some passengers are being treated for injuries. Local emergency responders are on the scene and an investigation is ongoing. Northeast Corridor service between New York and Philadelphia is suspended.

Many passengers were helped off the train and are being directed to a local church nearby.

According to CBS News, the two people that were killed were Amtrak employees.

The derailment comes less than a month after an Amtrak train derailed in Kansas while headed to Los Angeles from Chicago, leaving 32 people injured.
