WATCH: Demolition of Ohio Mad River Power Plant's 275-foot stack goes awry, falls wrong way

A planned demolition of the Mad River Power Plant's 275-foot stack in Ohio went awry as it came crashing down in the wrong direction Wednesday - luckily, no one was injured.

The controlled blasts should've sent the tower tumbling onto a cleared area towards the east, but instead it crashed towards the southeast, falling atop of two 12,500-volt power lines and back-up power generators.

About 25 people, made up by the media, FirstEnergy Corp. employees, demolition crews and their family members, scattered to avoid the falling power lines.

"It just started leaning the other way and I thought, ‘Holy cow' ... It was terrifying for a little bit," Springfield Township Fire Chief John Roeder told the Dayton Daily News.

The botched demolition job caused 4,000 customers on the West Side of Springfield to lose power for more than two hours and traffic lights in several areas were off as well.

Crews correctly detonated the explosives, but a crack that went undetected on the tower's south side caused it to fall backward, Lisa Kelly, president and owner of Advances Explosives Demolition Inc., said.

"It's property damage and it's not life," she said. "That's the most important thing - that no one was injured."

Fortunately, none of the debris landed in the Mad River or nearby railway tracks.

"(Explosives are) not without some uncertainty," said Tim Suter, FirstEnergy manager of exteal affairs. "Fortunately no one was injured."
