The 54-year-old white homeowner charged with MURDER after shooting dead 'drunk' black girl, 19, who knocked on his door asking for help after crash
A suburban Detroit homeowner charged with fatally shooting a 19-year-old woman on his porch has been arraigned on murder and other charges.
Theodore P. Wafer made an initial court appearance Friday in Dearbo Heights District Court. The 54-year-old faces second-degree murder, manslaughter and felony firearm charges in the death of Renisha McBride early on Nov. 2.
Wafer's bond was set at $250,000, and a preliminary examination was set for Dec. 18. He said "yes" in response to the judge's questions.
Wafer's lawyer, Matt Carpenter, says his "client has a very strong defense."
McBride was shot after police say they believe she was involved in a car accident nearby in Detroit and family members say she likely approached his Dearbo Heights home for help.

Charged: Wafer had been in hiding for a week since the death and police had not officially named him fearing reprisals as the case had been compared to that of Trayvon Martin
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy today said bringing the charges had nothing to do with race. She said they believed Wafer could not claim the killing was self defense under Michigan Stand Your Ground laws
