A police officer is recovering after being hit by a fleeing suspect early this moing.

That man, identified by police as 20-year-old Devon Evans, has been arrested.

The Sarasota Police Department says several officers went to the scene of a reported armed robbery at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Highway 301 around 1 a.m. One officer spotted the vehicle the suspect, Evans, was said to be driving and got behind him to attempt a traffic stop.

Officer William Schwenk used a maneuver to stop Evans' vehicle. When the officer got out of his car, police say Evans accelerated and hit Officer Schwenk and the Schwenk's car as he drove off.

Police say the officer fired his gun at the fleeing vehicle though he was pinned against his own car.

After Evans drove off, police went to his last known address at the Timber Chase Apartments. They arrested Evans when he drove up shortly after the crash.

Police say Officer Schwenk was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for treatment. He has been released.

Evans, who sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound, was also treated at the hospital and released to the Sarasota County Jail. He has been charged with two counts of robbery based on prior arrest warrants. Police say additional charges are pending and the incident is still under investigation.

The police department says Officer Schwenk, 39, has been with the department for about 11 years.
