Meet the world's oldest one-year-old

A teen who spent his whole life living "off the grid" celebrated his first birthday -at the age of eighteen.

Teenager Noah Boyce spent most of his life living with his family on a property in Michigan. His religious father Brian Boyce refused to recognise the US govement's authority and failed to register his children’s births or send them to school, Mlive.com reports. The children had also never been to see a doctor or dentist, so had no medical or immunisation records.

When the Boyce family was evicted from their land for failure to pay property tax, 17-year-old son Noah was left to fend for himself, sleeping on friends’ couches and tuing to a local church for help. Church member Chuck Chapman took Noah in for a year and set out to get him a birth certificate and integrate him back into society.

Mr Chapman tracked down the midwife who delivered Noah at home and discovered his birthday is December 10, 1993.

"It was pretty awesome to have a birthday," Noah said. "I didn't know what to expect, but people started giving me presents and birthday cards."

It took the midwife’s affidavit, letters from his grandparents, a statement from Noah's mother and correspondence with country, state and federal officials before Noah was issued his birth certificate.

The teenager is now focused on getting his education after a lifetime without schooling, and is already reading at a year six level thanks to tutoring and a scholarship, and even has his driver’s licence.

"I love going to school,” he told Mlive.

"I’ve taken control of my life now and things are starting to look up. I wish I had been able to go to school when I was younger. I’d be in a better place now. It’s hard to catch up, but I’m still young. Like they say, you’re never too old to lea."
