A homeless man, who has been sleeping rough for six years, has won $500,000 on a scratch card.

Michael Engfors, from Colorado, scooped the winnings on a $10 ticket and is now looking for a fresh start after losing his business and going through a divorce.

The 61-year-old is hoping to use the money to reconnect with his daughter, who he hasn’t seen for more than 20 years.

Michael had been staying at the Aspen Homeless Shelter in Colorado when his luck came through on Friday.

Jeremy Kowalis, who works at the shelter, told 9News: ‘Michael has seen a bottom that has pushed him right to the edge, but he never gave up.

‘He knew that if he kept pushing on, eventually his luck would change.’

He added: ‘I don’t think he normally spends $10 a day on a lottery ticket. But he did that day, and it sure paid off. It couldn’t have happened to a better person.’

The odds of winning the top prize on the Eteal Splendor scratch card game are 840,000 to 1.

The Aspen Homeless Shelter’s director is helping Engfors with the process of collecting his eaings.
