AT LEAST one person has died and 100 seriously wounded after a commuter train slammed into a station during rush hour.

Several are still trapped in the wreckage at Hoboken train station, New Jersey, following the horror rush hour smash just before 9am.

One passenger has died and many more are in a critical condition, according to a New Jersey transit spokesman.

Firefighters said there were "mass casualties", with at least 100 hurt.

Eyewitnesses reported that the train did not appear to brake.

John Minko said that the train "simply did not stop" and that "it went right through the barriers and into the reception area."

Survivors reported seeing passengers covered in blood and trapped under train wreckage.

Harrowing pictures from the scene show the wreckage of a mangled train carriage and a collapsed station ceiling.
