Gay Bashing Killer John Buice Granted Parole
HOUSTON -- A man who killed another man because he was gay was granted parole Tuesday.
John Buice will be released from prison in October.
Buice beat and stabbed Paul Broussard, 27, as Broussard and two friends left a Montrose club at 2 a.m. on July 4, 1991.
Buice received a 45-year prison sentence for the murder. He had been denied parole at least three other times.
Broussard's mother, Nancy Rodriguez, appeared before the parole board urging that Buice be kept in prison.
"Before there was Matthew Shepherd and James Byrd Jr., there was Paul Broussard," said Andy Kahan, the city of Houston victim's rights advocate.
Kahan said he and Rodriguez will ask the board to reconsider before Buice is released.
"If Buice had not stabbed Paul, Paul would have been injured, but he would have been alive. He's the one responsible for his death and we are of the opinion you should do at least half your term before eligible for parole," Kahan said.
