Five Pillars of Islam display in school taken down thanks to viral pic
Parents, maybe it's time to stop taking out-of-context pictures of artwork in your kids' schools and putting them online. A Wichita, Kansas, elementary school had displayed a bulletin board of the Five Pillars of Islam as part of its study of world religion. We say "had" because it has been removed after someone posted a picture of the display on Facebook with the comment "This is a school that banned all forms of Christian prayer. This can not stand." The picture went viral, and the school removed the bulletin board and sent a letter of explanation home with the students.
According to administrators, students at the school study "Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam as part of their [core curriculum]" (and they noted that yes, there is a painting of the Last Supper hanging in the school, and no, they haven't banned prayer, as the photo comment claimed). "The purpose is not to explore the matters of theology, but to understand the place of religion and religious ideas in history," a district statement said. "The bulletin board has been taken down until the unit is taught later this fall." [Source]
