A pair of deli owners have been arrested after allegedly scamming a lottery winner out of a $1million jackpot.

Father and son duo Nabal and Karim Jaghab reportedly told the winner that his scratchcard, bought at their store the Peninsula Deli and Grocery in Hempstead, New York, had won just $1,000.

They allegedly handed the man, who spoke hardly any English, the money in cash and reportedly kept the $1m winning card for themselves.

The two men, aged 57 and 26 respectively, were arrested after the 34-year-old Spanish-speaking man became suspicious.

Having retued to the shop the next day he requested, in vain, for his scratchcard back.

The father and son reportedly refused and said the man had actually won $10,000, which they would give him if he didn’t go to police.

According to the New York Post, Mr Jaghab sr told police on their arrival: ‘My son made a mistake. He had the ticket now. Everything is OK. We threw [the] ticket in the garbage.’

Police, however, found the win
