NEW BEDFORD, Mass. -- A woman authorities dubbed the "damsel in distress" because of the sob stories she told strangers to scam them out of small amounts of cash has pleaded guilty to larceny charges.

Wendy Price-Baldassari was sentenced Tuesday to three months of probation and ordered to pay $500 in restitution after pleading guilty to 20 counts of larceny less than $250.

Price-Baldassari, a Canadian citizen who lives in New Bedford, also faces deportation.

Police say Price-Baldassari fleeced kind-hearted strangers with hard luck stories, including one where she said she was out of gas for her car and locked out of her house.

Her attoey told The Standard Times that the outcome was fair. He says she needed the money because she didn't have a work permit and her husband is disabled.
