Cops threaten man with fine, jail time for 'lost dog' fliers
When Shawn Slater's service dog escaped from his fenced-in backyard, he plastered his Washington neighborhood with "lost dog" fliers. But instead of calls from would-be rescuers, he heard from the police, who said if he put up one more picture, he'd face a $250 fine and a day in jail for each sign they found. Slater had attached the posters to utility poles and city property, which he says he didn't realize was illegal.
The cops say they were educating the 34-year-old with their "courtesy call." But for Slater, it only added anxiety to his post-traumatic stress disorder, the reason he has a service dog in the first place. "[My dog is] my family and it's my sanity," he said. [Source]
